A Look Back – GoGoGorilla Cakes
Welcome to the Cakery and to my new blog! I hope you have enjoyed looking around my website and seeing what Ellie’s Cakery is all about. I have been thinking about what to blog about for my first post and decided to look back at one of my highlights from last year.
2013 was a brilliant year for Norwich mostly due to the popularity of the GoGoGorilla trail which saw beautifully decorated gorillas on the streets of Norwich which brightened up everyone’s Summer and raised money for local charity Break.
I was lucky enough to play a tiny part in the GoGoGorilla story and it all started with these Freddie Gorilla cupcakes which were featured in the EDP and Evening news.
After making these I was asked by Break to make some similar cakes for the night of the auction.
Each Gorilla had been individually hand painted by an artist, so I set about recreating these works of art in cake.
I hand made each gorilla covering them with white fondant and then I tried to recreate the artists work by hand painting the design onto each.
Each Gorilla was a challenge because of the intricate detail on the original, but I was so pleased with the end result and really enjoyed making these tasty little cakes!
These tasty Gorilla cakes got lots of attention ending up in the EDP and even a sidebar story on the BBC website! I was also lucky enough to attend the auction. The cakes were part of a silent auction on the night and raised just over £400.
