Behind the scenes in the Cakery- Making Clifford the Chimpanzee.
One of the cakes I am most proud of is Clifford the chimpanzee, Its a firm favourite with Cakery fans and its the one most people want to know how I made, so here it is!
The Chimpanzee started as three round and one square cake stacked on top of each other, from there it was a matter of cutting away cake to leave the body shape of a chimpanzee using photographs of as reference.
Once the body shape had been carved it was covered in buttercream. Once the basic shape had taken shape, I added and sculpted icing in the shape of arms, before the final layer of icing covered the whole thing.
After the cake was covered in a thin layer of icing I airbrushed the body to give it a more realistic fur like effect. Last but not least I spend time adding the facial features making him as close to a real chimpanzee as I could. I loved the end result, he was huge and had real character. The cake was for a 21st birthday, the recipient was studying zoology and I am told she loved Clifford just as much as I did!
